Movie title: Is 'rebel' a verb or a noun?

Most people pronounce it rebl (noun), but that has never made much sense to me. Rebel as in re-bell (verb) makes better sense: To resist/defy authority without a goal/principal sounds better. I think people pronounce it rebl because it trips off the tongue, even if it doesn't make sense.

.

reply

No it's rebl meaning a person who is rebellious but does not have a cause!

reply

I don't think it's meant as a verb, or else it would have been 'To Rebel Without a Cause' or 'Rebelling Without a Cause' to make it understandable. It must refer to Jimmy, the main character, and his unclear attitude toward bucking the status quo.

Yes or it would be 'Rebel Without Cause' rather than '...a Cause'

not necessarily

nevertheless, I actually like the idea of the title with rebel as a verb.

Have you ever in your life heard one person pronounce it re-bell Without A Cause ?

Ummm, what? Why would Rebel (noun) Without a Cause not make sense?

So if there was a movie called "Counselor with a Purpose" - you would wonder why they didn't call it "Counsel with a Purpose", because that makes more sense to you?

Interesting question.

As a noun, it's a matter-of-fact description of Dean's character. As a verb, it's an instruction to the audience to go wild.

adjective: describing Stark's character?

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...

Presumably it's meant to refer to James Dean's character, but Jim Stark really isn't a rebel in the story - he's actually a nice kid who occasionally acts out a little and gets into trouble because his family is a bit dysfunctional.
Within the 1950s reality, or at least how America chose to see "reality", any teenage expression of anger, or discontent for the way things are, was seen as rebellious behavior. But within a decade the shît would hit the fan, and the young people would have enough causes.
