Well that was fast

Now I love this movie but I just have to point one thing out.
Judy meets Jim just before school and watches her boyfriend tragically die that same night in a race against Jim. By the next morning(after the events of the movie) she's forgotten all about Buzz and is in love with Jim. Talk about moving on quick!hahaha. But in all seriousness this movie is one of my favorites and it breaks my heart everytime Plato dies :(

reply

I think jim and judy fell in love BECAUSE buz died. People do tend to fall for who they arewith during high stress or crissis. Its why people have take dates on roller coasters or scary movies. In psychology this phenomonon is called misatribution of arousal.

Judy is attracted to alpha males and i'm guessing that she's 'a dirty tramp' just like her daddy says or at least she's just acting like one for attention. Judy and Buzz were the leaders of the pack, albeit a pack of pretenders. punk wannabes who carry switchblades but don't really use them. it's all an act. acting cool in school but never crossing the line until the tragic 'chickie' accident.

Judy was already flirting with him when she handed him the dirt for his sweaty hands just before the race started. girls like Judy are heart breakers, nothing but trouble.

as for Plato, he is the product of a broken home. he's mentally disturbed. at the beginning of the film he's questioned for shooting puppies!! later he's carrying a gun running around shooting people at random. Plato even takes a shot at Jim and misses. two weeks ago i would have agreed with you about Plato's tragic end but since the Newtown massacre i see these disturbed adolescent males completely differently. i also now see undertones of 'suicide by cop' leanings as well.

The Newtown Massacre and Plato's breakdown is not an accurate comparison, they had totally different circumstances

reply

i'd say the circumstances were remarkably similar:

1. Both Plato and Lanza lived in upper middle class houses/neighborhoods.
2. Both came from broken homes.
3. Both lived with their mother.
4. Both used guns stolen from their mother.
5. Both had mothers whom had a need to protect themselves with deadly firearms (possibly for defense from abusive ex-husbands).
6. Both targeted the innocent and defenseless (Plato shot puppies, Lanza shot kids).
7. Both saw suicide as their only option in the end. (Plato's suicide by cop, Lanza kills himself.)
8. Both were social outcasts in high school.
9. Both were loners outside of high school with no friends.
10. Both had poor fashion sense (LOL). (Plato wore red and blue socks, Lanza always wore the same green shirt and khaki pants.)

Lanza would have scored about a 99 on the shooting range, Plato about a 5.

Girls like that in school are only about being seen with whoever is the hottest property. Dead kid is no longer hot property - have to move on fast otherwise you lose your social standing

reply

Similarly, many reviews describe how Judy and Jim 'adopt' Plato when they only really warmed up together for a couple of minutes before leaving him to his death.

She's a shallow little tart.
