When Jim Stark yells 'You're tearing me apart' with so much force

it adds a new dimension to the story and gives us a feeling of unpredictability in the character. Later we feel his pain and appreciate his nerve.

Jim Backus played his father. You would feel pain if your father was Mr Magoo!

When Dean yells that and falls on the floor crying, I roll my eyes and laugh. He was the ultimate ham, and I think he pulled the hysteria trick in all three of his movies.
