Where is it filmed?

Does anyone know where this movie was filmed? In the opening sequence, the train passes in front of a grain elevator. It looks like "Salina" appears on the sign. Could this be Salina, Kansas?

In "Vertigo" Kim Novak's character mentions that she is from Salina, Kansas. Possible interesting coincidence.

It was filmed in Riverside Park in Halstead Kansas.

Hutchinson Kansas. Cast and crew stayed at the Baker Hotel. My father was hotel manager, I had just been born! Kim Novak and Ros Russel held me as an infant.

Parts of the film were also filmed in Halstead, Kansas. The park and river and so on. I found it interesting to see what the river looked like before the dam. Definitely a pretty good film though.

Close. It was shot in Halstead, Kansas, and the surrounding area. The falls are still there, of course, and the little Riverside Park with the bridge. The swan that Kim came down the river on is in the town museum. The scenes with the giant grain elevators are from Hutchinson. And, there are still people that live there that played the extra roles.

I just got back from a tour of the locations used in that film. They are all in Kansas:

Salina: Opening shots and waterfall area where Holden bathes, makes love to Novak and hides later. The Benson home where Cliff Robertson and Raymond Bailey are playing golf on the front lawn.

Sterling: The lake sequence where Holden does a dive off a high diving board and Roberston/Novak have a love scene.

Nickerson: Where the Owens and Potts homes are - Holden comes up the alley behind the homes. Both backyards are used and the interior kitchen from another home nearby was used. The fronts are shown when the cast heads for the picnic.

Hutchinson: The huge grain elevators were filmed there and some interiors were filmed inside the Grandstand on the State Fairgrounds (Arthur O'Connell's apartment and the bath-house scenes). Those were filmed on rainy days. Also the cast stayed at the downtown Baker Hotel (on 2nd street) and the cast party was held at the Fox Theatre (on 1st street). My dad was the manager.

Halstead: Riverside Park is where the picnic was held. The museum does have the swan prop plus several stills and candid photos.

Most of the interiors were filmed on stages in Hollywood and some of the picnic scenes were shot (or reshot) at the Columbia Ranch.

On the main page of every movie, there's a selection in the left navigation bar that lists, if available, the filming locations.

The direct link for this movie is: http://imdb.com/title/tt0048491/locations

Said link lists:
Halstead, Kansas
Hutchinson, Kansas
Nickerson, Kansas
Salina, Kansas
Sterling, Kansas

Hi
The movie Picnic was filmed in Halstead Kansas. There is a little park there next to a creek. My uncle was one of the extras in the movie. It was a really big deal in this part of the world. I am not sure about the grain elevator. Salina is about 45 minutes north of Halstead, so it is possible the film crew may have taken som stock footage.

Trivia: Another movie the Cliff Robertson was in, Ace Eli and Roger of the Skies, was also filmed in Kansas.
