No suitcase?

Watched PICNIC on TCM for maybe the ninth time and just noticed that Hal didn't carry a suitcase, grip, gym bag, duffel bag or even a shopping bag. He appeared to have an extra shirt (?) tied up in his leather jacket. I've never hoboed or hitchhiked, but I figure even the poorest traveler would have SOMETHING to carry items. Wouldn't one try to keep an extra pair of socks, underwear and a toothbrush or razor? Even when he hopped the train the next morning, he was empty-handed (I would've at least have lifted some of Alan's socks!)
I had an uncle who had ridden the rails during the Depression from New York to Texas and back. In the 60s he still had a raggedy carpetbag in a closet that he had carried when he tramped around.
"May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?"
