Soundtrack for Picnic not available! Why?

After watching Picnic on TMC today, I was inspired to buy the soundtrack from Amazon. Surprisingly, they don't carry the CD but direct you to "other sellers" where it is available starting at $79.

Other Google searches were similarly frustrating.

Anyone know where it can be purchased at a reasonable price?

reply

The CD is out-of-print, so to speak. Once in a while, you may see the album on e-bay and the bidding starts at a reasonable price. I have never seen a CD copy offered, but that doesn't mean it isn't listed. You may also be able to pick up the album at some of the old record stores around and have a CD made for you from that. I hope you find one for yourself. It really is a beautiful soundtrack!

i bought the lp for $15.00, off the internet. send me a personal message and i tell you if it is still available from that site. if not i can see if a copy can be burned for you as MADE IN HEAVEN was for others.

the song Moonglow by eddie de lange, the tune Madge and hal dance to on the dock as their love is sealed, is also included in the film Casino and you may be able to obtain Moonglow on that Soundtrack.

In Casino, ironically, the "love" that is attached to the Moonglow melody is for the money that pours into the casino's coffers. It's the third tune in the soundtrack sequence.

Moonglow was written long before Picnic was made in 1955. The writer of the song died in 1949 and never learned of its fame and the famous scene it is attached to.

What I'm wondering is, why would anyone want the soundtrack? What other music is there?

reply

The soundtrack is all instrumental and all by George Duning.

Here are the tracks listed on the soundtrack

1. Love Theme - George Duning/Columbia Pictures Orchestra
2. Hal's Theme
3. The Owens Family
4. Flo And Madge
5. Hal's Boots
6. Moonglow and Love Theme
7. It's A Blue World/Torn Shirt
8. Torn Shirt (Concluded)/Hal's Turmoil
9. Rosemary Pleads/Rosemary Alone
10. Culmination/Hal's Escape
11. That Owens Girl/Millie
12. You Love Me/Madge Decides

...This line has been a bit unclear as to whether a legit CD version of the soundtrack was ever issued .
I am tending ti think " No " , that there was only a 50s LP , possibly jothing more ever .
I am a trifle disappointed to hear that the OS is 100% score music --- I had thought that such songs as the " Ain't She Sweet ? " sung by the " townsfolk " would be nice to hear in full-length versions .

I have the CD; ordered it in 2000 or 2001 from Amazon. Glad I did now with the prices they're fetching on eBay!

Hi, genevievehillidge. I have the album soundtrack of "Picnic" and it is a soundtrack of instrumentals that are beautiful and haunting with the music evoking all the different moods/emotions that played out in the movie. Of course, the best track is the Moonglow/dance sequence music, but I actually enjoy listening to the whole album. Yours was a good question. And what a shame the writer of Moonglow didn't live to see what beauty his song expressed in "Picnic"!

I bought the soundtrack about four yrs ago from Amazon for $16.00! Glad I did, based on your post!

The LP issue of the soundtrack was one of the biggest selling and now most commonplace of all movie soundtracks - it's everywhere that an old stack of records is.

In the film, they also use the 1936 song, "One, Two, Button Your Shoe" which was in the Bing Crosby film "Pennies from Heaven" which was also a Columbia Pictures release, as was "Picnic".

And I see that "It's a Blue World" is also on the soundtrack LP. That was a tune from another Columbia Pictures release - a Rita Hayworth film from 1941, IIRC. Great song.

OK - as I recall the LP album of "Picnic" only really ahd one tune that people were buying it for - and that was the main theme from "Picnic" and with "Moonglow" laid over it. It was a one tune soundtrack like "Summer of '42" was.

I found the LP recently and it was lulling to hear it again. I could visualize all of the scenes as the music played. I burned a copy but it makes my mind wander so I can't listen to it while I'm driving.

Why ain't you at the garden party you heathen?

I have the CD in my music collection. Got it about 10 years ago from totalE.com which later went out of business. I didn't know it had since gone out of print. That's a shame. Someone on Amazon has two copies sealed for $180.00 each. Mine was one of those budget CD issues costing me only about $7.95.

Good luck to anyone looking for it.

In 1956, I bought the vinyl stereo LP of the Picnic soundtrack for, I believe, the princely sum of $ 2.98. At the same time, I also bought the vinyl 45RPM version of the song Moonglow and the Theme From Picnic, one of my all time favourite songs. The LP is still like new, in mint condition because initially I copied it to reel to reel, later on 8 track, then cassette and finally on digital CD. My record has not been played more than ten times, and only then on the finest transcription equipment available. The 45RPM record disappeared about 10 years ago, but I do have a digital CD copy of that record. The LP was issued by the Decca label with Morris Stoloff conducting the Columbia Pictures Orchestra.

The song Moonglow (one of my parents all time favourites), was composed by Will Hudson and Irving Mills in 1934 and first recorded on August 20, 1934 by Ethyl Waters with members of the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra. The Theme from Picnic was written by George Duning and the blending of Moonglow with the Theme was pure genius. Amazingly, in 1956, two instrumental versions of Moonglow and The Theme From Picnic were on the charts at the same time: Morris Stoloff (#1) and by George Cates (#4).

Because it is an original recording, I think my record has now become very valuable. Nevertheless, I'd love to have a digital CD made from the original tapes, even if only for comparison purposes with the vinyl LP.

I found a used CD soundtrack for Picnic on eBay around a year or so ago. Think I think I got it for under $20.00. It might take awhile for one to become available again, but I would just check every day until one came up. Price might go a little higher now but you never know.

There are a couple of versions of the theme on itunes.

wow, that's a pretty penny!

The new Blu-ray disc from Twilight Times has a music only soundtrack as an "extra". It's an expensive Blu-ray but a lot cheaper than buying an overpriced second hand CD. A CD won't sound as good anyway.

I have a version done by Arthur Fiedler and boston pops if anyone would like me to email them a copy.

I have the soundtrack on cd. The details for you are that it is a MCA Records release, from the original Decca LP 8320. Good luck.
