STEAK FRYS?

I don't get the reference to the "fraternity steak frys" made by Robertson to Holden in the bathhouse, equating them somehow to picnics. Then Holden says, "And you know how those turned out" (or something similar). What the hell they talkin' 'bout?

"Martha Washington was a hip, hip, hip lady, man."

"Steak fries" were like barbecues, with the main meat beings steak, all cuts. The frats I knew in the 70s would usually hold their fries sometime in May. Of course, there'd be kegs and other adult beverages, so things could get rowdy, as Alan & Hal allude to.

May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?

I also was in college in the (mid) '70s, but never heard of a "steak fry." I saw a reference to that recently, and figured out from the context that it meant, essentially, a home BBQ. Still, the term "fry" is strange, especially when meat cooked outdoors is usually grilled or roasted. The "You know how those turned out" line is pretty damn cryptic, I think. Perhaps it was edited down from a longer explanatory passage. Or perhaps the evasive allusion to adult shenanigans is just in deference to the conservative speech of the times.
