I thought there was an alternate ending... One where the Captain had an appendicitis and they removed his appendix, replacing it with a handful of marbles? Was this a different movie? I could have swore that was what happened in the end!?!?!

Yes, you are right. A so so movie called "Ensign Pulver" made in 1964. Robert Walker as Pulver; Burl Ives as the captain; Walter Matthau as the doctor.
