Why Did Jock and Trusty Propose?

I never understood this. I get that they are protective of her, but why marry her? I don't share some opinions that they are bad, I think these two are great, even though they "mis-judged" the Tramp, they admitted it and in the end saved him.

What I don't get is why they wanted to marry Lady. It seemed like an obligation...was she pregnant and they wanted to keep up her good name? That's the only thing I can think of? Is it more simple than that?

Theres 2 different views to this. One view is that they wanted to marry her because they wanted to get her away from Aunt Sarah. That one doesnt make sense to me cause Unt Sarah was going to leave like that night. The 2nd one (and the one I believe is right) is that its because the night Lady and Tramp had their Romantic night, they slept together and lady was pregnant. And back then, (even though these are dogs, its being viewed by people) sex was not right outside of marriage. So they wanted to marry her so it was believed that they were married and she had puppies. I like the 2nd reasoning more. It makes more sense and even though this is a Disney movie, there are a lot of hidden sexual themes that kids dont pick up on and adults do.

That's what I thought too. Thanks for your view, this scene always confused me. I figured it was like that traditional view that one should be married if they have children and it was looked upon poorly if they weren't..so to save face, you should marry.

reply

Yea, I really thought it was sneaky how Walt Disney did that. Very creative.

Wow, I never noticed that. Never even given a second thought to it actually. Very sneaky indeed.

Wow... And here I thought, that they proposed to Lady to make her feel better, because Tramp had hurt her feelings. I didn't think about her being pregnant. I'm so naive some times. But then, it was really cleverly done, so it would go over the children's (and maybe even some adults's) heads.

Yes, it's true! IMDB has reached Sweden!

I have to admit, that I'm naive too. LOL

I was kinda always wondering about that, like I thought it was like Tramp got her pregnant, but I didn't think it would be in a kids movie, but I was always so sure it was like that and hidden so well. Then I saw the DVD and saw what the guy said and I was like "I knew it!" lol Most people I know don't even get it.

That first part I never thought of that one but oh well it might have happened, I just assumed they talked all night till they fell asleep in the park.

Personally, I think the scene implies both scenarios, just to keep it clean. It can be argued that Jock and Trusty recognized that Lady was not the main priority for Jim Dear and Darling (as evidenced by leaving her with a bitch like Aunt Sarah) and were being gentleman in offering their homes to her.

The second, more 'adult' option was that Jock and Trusty heard what had happened (in a posh neighborhood like that, it probably got around fairly quickly what had happened) most likely assuming that she was going to have puppies. Even if they didn't assume that Lady and the Tramp had 'gotten it on' having her in jail would still make her damaged goods.

In both cases, they would be watch-dogs against Tramp. The general idea would be that he wouldn't try anything with a 'taken' dog, or at least, one with 24/7 protection. One night with Tramp and look what happens: pregnant, a runaway and in jail. Just bad news.

If I were any more fun I'd be boobies and bubble-wrap.

As specifically stated in the commentary, she and Tramp had done the deed the night before, and Jock and Trusty wanted to save her honor.

reply

They proposed to save her face, as it was obvious that she had spent the night with Tramp.
It had nothing to do with Aunt Sarah, or her being pregnant, as nobody could have known she was pregnant so soon.

reply

Saving her face? It still wouldnt do anything. Plus, with a dogs scent, they would definitely know. Like the above poster said, it was even stated on the DVD behind the scenes that they slept together basically.

Are you agreeing or disageeing with me?

reply

Disagreeing, sorry haha I messed that post up a bit. But the reason I dont is because even Walt Disney himself, when he alive, stated that this was his most adultish film because or that scene and it was implied. If you have the DVD, watch the extra features on the 2nd disc. Its like 13 minutes in or something like that.

Okay I agree wholeheartedly that they spent the night together, I'm pretty sure I said that.
But I'm still not 100% convinced that they knew she was pregnant.

Maybe, if Jock and TRusty knew that lady was on heat they would probably think that there would be little chance she wasn't pregnant after spending the night with a male, so they assumed with good reason that she was pregers.
Okay I just convinced myself into agreeing with you. But you have to admit it's a complicated blend of human and dog behaviour that is portrayed by these dog characters.

reply

Yea, it is really complicated. Haha!

There are a lot of arguments on this board about it. I take the scene where Lady was being chased by the 3 dogs showing that she was in heat. Cause if she was just on their territory, they wouldve stopped after she left but it seemed like they wanted more than that. Then Tramp saved. Woot! lol

reply

Yeah the more I think about it, the more I believe your right. I guess I had always believed those dogs were chasing Lady to simply maul her, but your explanation seems much more realistic.

reply

I had always figured that since Lady had been ignored and struck by her previously doting masters, Jock and Trusty wanted to propose marriage so she could come and live with one of them, in a household with no children.

reply

She was only ignored and struck before the baby was born. After the baby was born they didn't do that to her. They only did that before for the baby's saftey.

Considering what a Fade To Black often signifies at the end of a romantic scene in film...

TV Tropes has it down as a Parental Bonus.. definitely strongly implied that Lady became pregnant...

reply

Hehe I must be very naive I thought they were just trying to get her to a safer and more confortable place since the Aunt was such a bitch!

Don't dream it: be it!
