Sense of smell

What's everyone's opinion on what happened with Trusty at the end? Supposedly he lost his sense of smell, yet he managed to get to Tramp in time.

I figure there's a couple possibilities...

1) Jock was just mistaken. Trusty never lost his sense of smell.

2) Trusty's sense of smell waned in the years since his retirement, but when a situation arose where he was really needed, it kicked back in.

3) Trusty never got his sense of smell back, he just got lucky.

What do you think?

I think it's more of option number one. I think he just was sometimes too dumb to realize what he was smelling but when he really needed to find something, he'd find it.

Either one or two, but definitely not three. I think the situation is ambiguous--perhaps intentionally so--and you could interpret it either as Jock being mistaken, or as Trusty returning to his former glory in a time of crisis for one last triumph.

Personally, I lean toward two.
