Lady and the Tramp vs. Oliver + Company

There are quite a few similarities between the characters in the two films, most notably Tramp and Dodger. Even Pedro and Bull resemble Tito and Francis, respectively. Jock, Peg and Trusty (as well as Pongo from "101 Dalmatians") all show up in cameo roles in "Oliver".

However, I prefer this 1955 classic to the 1988 modern mess. It was an interesting idea to do Dickens in New York City with dogs and cats, but this is still a classic from the '50's that I've grown quite attached to lately, much like "The Rescuers" (1977). (Incidentally both "Lady and the Tramp" AND "The Rescuers" seem to share a release date: June 22; 22 years apart, of course.)

I noticed the cameos too, and so I find it hard it hard to not compare both films also. I have to say, though it's probably the unpopular choice, I much prefer Oliver and Company.
I'm not sure why Oliver & Co0 has such a bad rep. Fair enough the animation isn't as great as most Disney films, but otherwise it is a great movie. The soundtrack is much more memorable and fun (and just all-round fantastic!!) than that of Lady and the Tramp.
Story-wise, they both have strong points and weak points. I found the ending of Lady and the Tramp to be quite anti-climatic. When the story faces it's final hurdle (ie; Tramp and Lady taking on the rat) I don't find it as thrilling as it should be. This is where the stakes should be the highest in the story but in Lady and the Tramp I found it quite boring. I much preferred the face off between Fagan and his gang against Sykes in Oliver & Co.
Yes, I know Lady and the Tramp has that spaghetti which is incredibly romantic, but I don't think that makes the film any better than Oliver and Company.
The way I see it, the difference between the two is that Lady and the Tramp is more iconic- perhaps just for that one image of the two dogs kissing.
Alos, most of us were more likely to have grown up watching classic Disney films such as Lady and the Tramp, so perhaps nostalgia makes us feel that certain films are more credible than the more lesser known Disney's.

I can't choose between them, both are timeless stories and I love them both.

That's not an easy question!!

I have always been obsessed with dogs, so animated canine movies rank very highly with me. As a kid I was ALWAYS asking for L&aT and Oliver merchandise at the Disney Store (and rarely finding anything for Oliver that I didn't have--if anything at ALL. L&tT always had more, but still not nearly enough to satisfy me!) Anyway, both movies are 10s as far as I'm concerned, and both have provided me with all-time favorite characters and loads of fond memories. I think that I may have to pick Oliver & Company, by a hair or two.
