Pigeon

I was wondering about this, but why does Tramp call Lady 'Pigeon'? when he shortens it to 'Pige' it sounds like B I T C H.

Is it me or did anyone else catch that?

I was convinced he was calling her B...H as well. Honest

reply

Well technically that wouldn't becan insult, she IS a dog

I've heard that in England "pigeon" is used as a term of endearment.

reply

Yeah, the word "Pidge" sounds more like "b@#^h" the more I watch the cartoon. It's pretty funny actually.

reply

I never thought it sounded like "bitch"...but of course, she IS one of those anyway, so...;) But I guess my parents explained to me that "Pigeon" and "Pidge" were merely his pet names for her early enough that it never seemed odd to me. This movie WAS one of my earliest obsessions.

My mistake lol. I read it online somewhere, but I wasn't completely sure of how true it was. :)

To answer your question about why Tramp calls Lady "Pideon", you have to remember that an alternative definition of that word is "one who is easily fooled or duped". When Tramp first sees Lady, Jock, and Trusty in Lady's yard, her hears them discussing how wonderful babies are for a family. Tramp laughs at the idea that a baby will not change anything when it arrives. He calls Lady "pigeon" because Tramp believes that the arrival of the baby will change EVERYTHING- for the bad. By calling her that, he is gently mocking Lady's naivete.
As you say, Tramp refers to Lady as "Pidge" throughout the film - but it becomes a term of endearment rather than ridicule.

It always reminded me of a slang term like "kid." The response mentioning that the term is also a sort of slang for "sucker" also seems correct. They eventually become terms of endearment. Every time I see this film I think "pidge" or "pigeon" are terms Gene Kelly would have (and might have) used. In fact, many of Tramp's lines sound like Kelly.
