There is an old wives tale that cats try to steal a child's breath. I think they are just sniffing the child's breath, as my cats have always done to me - it's some sort of greeting and better than dogs sniffing each other's butts.

I remember being creeped out by the cats as a kid, but when I watched it now I was only annoyed by the silly Chinese accents. The only annoying thing about an otherwise sweet movie.
