Check out the footage of the NYC premiere in 1955

This is included as a special feature on the DVD and is very interesting to see how premieres in 1955 operated. The attendees were decked out and paid $50 per seat. Eisenhower's daughter, Milton Berle, Carol Channing, Joel Grey, Marilyn Monroe (not interviewed but shown trying to get in with Joe D.), Jack Warner, Eva Marie Saint, and an interview with Steinbeck himself. Awesome.

Actually, Marlyn Monroe posed as an usherette at the premier of EOE. At that time, movie theaters employed young people who wore uniforms and used a little flashlight to help people find their seats. The proceeds from the premiere were contributed to charity and/or to The Actors Studio.

It looks like Julie Harris wasn't there either?

reply

Yeah I just watched it on my DVD. It was pretty interesting.

There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.

reply

Just a nit:
It was Truman's daughter Margaret Truman Daniel, not Eisenhower's daughter...
