The Bar Scene

I know this has been mentioned before but those looks that Cal gives the girl from the bar when he wants to see his mom...they're incredibly swoon-worthy. He practically seduces her with his eyes! I'm shocked it took her that long to say yes to him! Just another example of the perfection that was James Dean. He didn't have to say a word and you could practically melt. In my opinion he was and always will be the hottest man ever to step into Hollywood.

Yes, I agree about how hot he was in that scene. I would have sold out my own mother if he had asked me to with that sexy look. I cannot agree with you about him being the hottest man ever in Hollywood though. Marlon Brando gets that honor. Hands down! No one can hold a candle to young Brando. No one.

If we are not our brother's keeper, at least let us not be his executioner.

I think James Dean with that brunette had wayyy more chemistry than he did with Julie Harris.

reply

Yes, "wayyy more chemistry". But it doesn't bother me with Cal and Abra, because Julie Harris had a tough role--she must be determined to stick with Aron.

Lois Smith (Anne in the bar) is now 81 and still acting in films.

Really? Wow. Thanks for the tidbit.

I think Lois Smith was considered for the role of Abra but Kazan needed an actress who really projected a quality of maturity. Lois smith is a wonderful actress but probably was not quite right for Abra at least to Kazan. One thing I noticed about her in subsequent roles is that she is usually cast as a neurotic quirky person as in Five Easy Pieces. You can see some of that persona in the EOE bar girl as well. She seems to have been locked into that character type.

However, If you look at the screen test with Dean and Smith, One cannot help but see the possibilities of what could have been done if Smith played Abra. They are incredibly together.
