shareI'm no expert here, but i read that Paul Newman and James dean both tested for the part of Cal. I was thinking, if you 'stretched' your imagination Mr. Newman would have been a great choice for Aron. more like 'Cain and Abel', rather than twins as Mr. Steinbeck's characters. Two different fathers COULD have been brought in[as in the hint by Kate], and the older Obedient son, VS. the young rebellious son [and possibly Kate's favorite son]
shareIt might have divided fans more.Aron I felt was meant to be the bland goody goody that turns out to kind of a jerk.This way the viewer is with Cal all the way.
Dean/Newman would have made an interesting movie though and it a good alternate way to take the film.The character of Abra would have had a different place in the film prehaps slighty less significant?
Many feel Newman got better as time went on and he wasn't at Dean's level when the film was made.No doubt though he had more charisma than the actor who did play Aron.
