Cal and Abra

East of Eden would have to be one of the best films i've ever seen - and as someone in the 45 plus age group I've seen a few!
I think one of the best parts of the Film is the relationship between Cal and Abra - the manner in which it develops is beautifully shown and there is a real chemistry between them. I loved the way he was able to gaze into her eyes for extended periods but was unable to look directly at anyone else for more than a few seconds.

I agree. The chemistry between them was great and I love how they fall for each other in the movie. My favorite scene is the Ferris wheel scene. It made me want to take a girl up on the Ferris wheel after seeing that part. I love how she relates more to Cal than Aron and she realizes Cal is the one. James Dean's acting was great in that part. He didn't even have to say anything up on the Ferris wheel. He was great at acting with his eyes.

Yeah! They have such a cute relationship <3

There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.

James Dean and Julie Harris had great chemistry, and as for the development of the relationship between Cal and Abra... it was just beautiful! From the brief conversation in the field while Cal ate Aron's lunch, to the Ferris Wheel scene, to the final kiss- I loved every minute of it!

That Julie Harris was one lucky dame to lock lips with James Dean.

Yeah, it was a great kiss. He moved in and so did she. She tells him later that it didn't mean anything and to forget it. But she really did love him. Another great scene is when Abra is pleading with Adam Trask to forgive his son. She tells Adam how she loves Cal and needs him to be strong.

Cal and Abra are one of my top five movie couples, their relationship is so beautiful, and Jimmy and Julie have such great chemistry!

"I loved the way he was able to gaze into her eyes for extended periods but was unable to look directly at anyone else for more than a few seconds."

Yes!

"He's already attracted to her. Time and monotony will do the rest."

Well as expected, Julie Harris is criticised for not being pretty enough &/or being too old, and to a certain extent I agree, but their chemistry was incredible IMO, and that Ferris wheel scene was so seductive, Dean's expressions are to die for us ladies.

Julie looked after Jimmy and I think made him better in the role. He seemed genuinely uncomfortable in the appropriate scenes but I think if they'd used a younger prettier actress, he wouldn't have translated that ackwardness, (look at the difference in Rebel, I didn't feel any emotion when he kissed Natalie Wood), but I think Julie made him look better and let's face it, he's the only one that's remembered from the film, mostly because of his incredibly good looks, so she did him a favour !!!!
