This was beautifully shot

With all the emphasis on Dean's acting and the story, no one seems to be noticing what beautiful cinematography the film features. Many scenes are wonderfully well lit and interestingly shot. My favorite shot is very striking - where Cal has just left his brother with his mother, and stands out in the hallway. He casts a demented shadow on the floor, representing the twisted state of his vengeful soul at that moment. It's a brilliantly shot movie.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Absolutely beautiful cinematography and the overall feel of the film.

The poppy-field scene could have been shot yesterday. It's wonderful, and obviously outdoors.

Special mention also to the scene where Cal appears from behind the tree where Abra has been comforting him after his gift has been rejected and seems to be trsnsformed from a youth into some creature of revenge and hatred.

The blocking was excellent. All too often, however, I
found the setup too stagy, a case in point being that scene
with Cal and Aron in the garden before Cal lures him to the
whorehouse. Shot from a bird's eye view, it had the look of a
a stage set viewed from the upper loge of a theater.
