all I remember of it was the delta wing
engines bursting into life as the film started
I must have been only about seven when
I got my mum to take me to it..

and of course the little yellow flower that
bloomed..

In the commentary, Dante says that "this is a dramatisation of a non-fiction book by..." but I can't make out the name. You wouldn't happen to know it, would you?

Yes, the author is Willie Ley. I had to play it a few times and do a Google to find out who it was:
