That Asteroid
Just saw this the other night. Typical 50's sci-fi: cheap special effects, but load of fun! Especially that asteroid! Did it not look like the ship was flying past a humongous meatball?

shareJohn Fulton's effects are somewhat clunky in this film. First shot of the space wheel, part of the edge of it disappears due to blue light spill from the blue screen it was shot in front of. Budget for this film was the lowest George Pal had had up to this time and I read John P. Fulton honestly didn't care much about doing visual effects as he was wanting to be a director. Also, I think he was much more focused on effects for THE TEN COMMANDMENTS which was in production at the same time. I love the asteroid scene though. I laugh out loud at how it seems to have a will of it's own and tries to catch the spaceship.
share"Asteroid! Right ahead!" (or, behind, in this case)
