Fante and Mingo are close friends. There is nothing in the movie to indicate anything further. They share a room, but not a bed. Mingo is distraught when Fante dies. That's not proof of gayness.
The people who have doubts about their homosexuality are rational people who aren't looking to project their own hangups onto a movie.
TCM showing the movie during gay pride month doesn't establish anything. It's just their way of woke pandering.
