Horse Deal season 5, ep 3
I adore Gunsmoke. It doesn't depict the wild west as a fun, clean place to live. Indeed, it was dirty and and mean. HBO's Deadwood also did a phenomenal job with its research and production. I find Bonanza, and Have Gun Will Travel to be too clean and pleasant.
In Horse Deal, there were 2 great shots. When Deesha gets shot, the camera is on the ground and he falls (almost) on top of us. The 2nd is when he dies in Matt's arms and sais he 'feels death coming upon' him. That's when the camera zooms close to his face. All this was to give full impact to Deesha's death... not to make the audience sympathize with the swindler, but to illustrate the death of a man. That's what I call raw directing.
