Indian Scout
oh my god!!! THAT was DeForest Kelley! I didn't recognize him right away... 10 yrs later, he portrays my favorite character on Star Trek, the original series.

Not surprising. Many actors are unrecognizable in their "early" years -- Sam Elliott is a perfect example.
Leonard Nimoy was similarly unrecognizable, until a Gunsmoke episode in which he plays the Indian friend of a white trapper.
Kelley played the heavy in a number of tv westerns. He made for a really sinister bad guy.
shareLeonard Nimoy was similarly unrecognizable, until a Gunsmoke episode in which he plays the Indian friend of a white trapper.I have to disagree with you on this one. Nimoy appeared on Wagon Train 3 times before his first appearance on Gunsmoke, and in each of these episodes he is immediately recognizable. My very young daughter spotted him with no trouble: "Hey, it's Mr. Spock!"
That's interesting. I've seen two or three Gunsmokes in which Nimoy is listed in the credits -- and wondered why I didn't recognize him.
shareI know a lot of terrific actors showed up on Gunsmoke. I just tuned in to Cooter where a very young Robert Vaughn appears for maybe 5 minutes.

Watching Burt Renolds on recorded interview regarding Gunsmoke on Encore Westerns for Starz - saying he, BORN in 1936, STARTED WATCHING GUNSMOKE when he was 7 yrs old.
Funny how Burt can't remember the difference between being 7 and 19, in 1955.
He sure cannot look in the mirror and think anyone will believe he is 12 yrs YOUNGER than he really is.
Gunsmoke began in 1955 - QUINT started on GUNSMOKE in 1962 when Gunsmoke was 7 yrs old.
If Burt was being honest, he would have been playing Quint at 14 yrs old. Instead of 26. That blacksmith didn't look like any 14 yr old I ever saw in my life!
How about anyone else?
I remember when I thought he was SO GREAT when he was on Gunsmoke.
QUINT was always an honorable man
