Albert Salmi picture

This may have covered but why is there a picture of Albert Salmi from Bonanza with the Gunsmoke pictures?

reply

Albert Salmi is a wild card. He transcends all boundaries.

What Bonanza is that by the way? I like him. I might look for it.

reply

Yeah I guess so. Silent Thunder from Season Two.

reply

Thanks jr_bailey! Got it in my list now. Looks like it's got Stella Stevens in it too.

reply

Yes it does a very young Stella Stevens at that.

They focus on the actor who appeared in three Gunsmoke episodes:

Gunsmoke (TV Series)
Willis Jeeter / Ed Carstairs / Holly
- Sergeant Holly (1970) ... Willis Jeeter
- Mistaken Identity (1967) ... Ed Carstairs
- Death Watch (1966) ... Holly

Ok but there lots of actors that appeared in numerous episodes.

reply

Denver Pyle and Anthony Caruso each did fourteen episodes. I think Morgan Freeman did sixteen or more.

- Mistaken Identity (1967) ... Ed Carstairs

I think that's the one that's always stuck in my head when I see Salmi, where he stomps and robs that nice guy on the trail then steals his identity. That, and the Night Gallery with all the old gunfighters, where he keeps spitting tobacco.

You notice you rarely see that Ned Beatty blonde peach fuzz mustache on anybody that's worth a crap on TV or movies. Another ne'er-do-well trademark seems to be the cowboy hat turned sideways with the brim rolled up (like Ike Clanton in Tombstone or Bruce Dern in The Cowboys). It's typically a bum, an a**hole, or an a**hole bum.

I always remember Salmi for his role in the pilot movie for Carradine's Kung Fu.

And his name was Raif...seems like one of the more ubiquitous names for slimy bad guys. And Salmi's Raif certainly fit that description...an extremely nasty character.

Always kinda creepy seeing him, when his brutal murder remains one of the great unsolved mysteries of the film industry.

reply

Yeah, that stuff will stick with you. With me, Salmi is probably "guilty until proven innocent" when he shows up in something. I think only within the past few weeks I finally caught him as a good guy (in a McCloud episode).

Re: His death- I thought he had just killed his wife and himself. I need to go back and read up on it.

Looking him up on Wiki you are correct, that source states it was a murder/suicide.

But back in the late 90s I saw one of those shows about mysteries and scandals from Hollywood, and one episode was about Salmi. That show said it was not clear what actually happened, and that the case was unsolved.

For more than 20 years I thought this was correct, but I guess that's what I get for watching one of those shows...!

reply

Ben- Yeah, between a Wiki page and sensationalized Hollywood news, I'd probably go with the Wiki, but these days, you can't even be sure where that came from.

@jr_bailey- Started watching that Bonanza last night. I actually had seen it at some point. You're right about Stella Stevens. Almost unrecognizably innocent looking. I guess my images of her come from Cable Hogue.

It was more than 20 years ago that I saw the show on Salmi, so I'm thinking it may have been family or friends insisting that it wasn't suicide, similar to Carole Landis. She died in 1948, but to this day there are many who insist Ms. Landis did NOT commit suicide.

I guess my images of her come from Cable Hogue.
Oh yeah, there's a couple scenes in that film that kinda stay with a fella...😘

One thing for sure, The Ballad of Cable Hogue has a *great* cast.

reply

Yeah Cable Hogue is a good movie.

Another time when he appears as a good guy is in the "Big Valley" episode "Under a Dark Star." He was also one of Daniel Boone's friends on that show, appearing in 20 episodes in that role (Yadkin is the only name listed in the credits.) And he was in two episodes of "Lost in Space" in a more comedic role.

Because Albert Salmi was NOT "from" "Bonanza." He appeared on that show, and others, yes, but as a guest star. You might as well ask why they have pictures of Dan Blocker, DeForest Kelley, William Shatner, Ed Asner, Carroll O'Connor, and many more. They all made guest appearances on "Gunsmoke."
