Finally saw my first episode of Cheyenne

I'm nearly 50 years old and to my knowledge, Cheyenne has never been shown in my area (Detroit)on TV. I have heard about this show for years and was always interested in seeing it as I have always been a Clint Walker fan.

Today, I purchased a Cheyenne sampler DVD. It features 3 episodes (The Storm Riders--season 1), (The Trap--season 2), (The Young Fugitives- season 6). I just finished watching The Storm Riders, so I can now say I have finally experienced Cheyenne. I'll watch the other episodes later. So what do I think?

This was definetely adult fare. 5 minutes into the show, Cheyenne is wounded and tended to by two pretty ladies, who waste no time ripping his shirt off and stroking his hairy belly. Although one of the ladies is married, she makes no bones about it--she is hot for Cheyenne. Later, the lady tries to wake her husband up in the barn and causes a major scene which is pretty shocking considering this was 1955 TV.

Cheyenne is a likeable show, but from this one episode, it doesn't rate as my favorite western. I have always been partial to Gunsmoke and Bonanza and a few others but I think I would enjoy this show if complete seasons are ever released on DVD.

Talk about poorly written garbage. This is another fine example of how bad our school system has become. Oh, by the way, meathead, TYPING LIKE THIS IS STUPID, just like your post.

What does your yammering about Jim Brown have anything to do with Cheyenne?

Postscript MR IDIOT: Go back to school. What an ass

I would go back and view the other 2 Cheyenne shows you have. The episode you describe is not indicative of the mainstream Cheyenne programs. This is a classic western, one of my all time faves.

I have watched the other 2 episodes on the DVD. For now, I'll stand behind my statement that Cheyenne is a good western, but not my favorite. Of course, if additional episodes are ever released on DVD, I absolutely would be interested in seeing more of Cheyenne. Walker is great in the role and I do enjoy the more adult approach. Maybe I'll give the show a higher rating once I've seen it more.

Amazon will have the whole first season available on DVD on June 6th.

Thanks mickya, I'm glad you liked it more the 2nd time around. I think its very easy to get into Clint Walker in that character, he does it so well. I also agree with you on Bonanza, great classic.

I am also a fiftys baby and remember Cheyenne fondly. The story line was never that great to me but my father was a big western fan. So we watch all of them Wagon Train, Bonanza,The Lone Ranger etc and this was one of his favorites. And with only one TV lol it was one of mines as well.
But the show I really remember as my all time favorite was Maverick follow closely by Have Gun Will Travel, the only show on Saturday night I watched.

I got those same three episodes on a DVD through NetFlix. Like you, I didn't care for The Storm Riders at all - my kids were watching it with me, and I was pretty shocked that such intense adult fare would be on that show. I had watched it as a kid growing up (probably in reruns) and I didn't remember anything like that. The other two episodes you mentioned are *much* better. We enjoyed them very much. But, no, I did not particularly like that first one. I thought it was almost like an Alfred Hitchcock show, with the insanity element and the married woman so openly lusting after Cheyenne. JMHO

Mickya, you're wrong about Cheyenne not showing in the Detroit area. I am over 50 years old, but I probably missed the first 3-4 years of the show because I was only a tot who had to be in bed by 8 o'clock because I more remember Cheyenne, Sugarfoot and the other guy more than just Chyenne alone.

But as for judif71's argument about The Storm Riders being too adult, what is too adult? The woment didn't rip his shirt off, they simply removed it to administer to his injuries. Now if the blonde took that opportunity to touch that drum-tight belly of his, well, what red-blooded woman wouldn't? You talk about the married woman lusting after him; you don't mention his rebuffs. And why not mention how the young girl lusted, too? But the older woman had come to realized that she'd married a provencial, drunken little knob of a man and her head was unfortunately turned by this big, handsome, soft-spoken stranger and tragedy ensues. Do you think that doesn't happen?

The problem with TV today is that it's been idiotized down to the level of children. Cheyenne was a man facing a man's problems every week. The Storm Raiders episode was as good as any other episode of the show.

Let me rephrase that Cheyenne has never been shown in Detroit: I meant in reruns. I was just a small boy during its original run and don't remember seeing it. It's very likely my mom watched another program when it was on. Probably a soap opera. She didn't like westerns. While I was growing up, I never saw it on the local Detroit channels (this was in the days before cable). As far as I know, it hasn't been shown in reruns on the cable channels like Encore Westerns or TV Land in recent years.

So, until I saw the episodes on the DVD, I never had the opportunity to see Cheyenne.

Cheyenne is currently shown on what used to be called Goodlife but has changed it's name now to American Life (I think). Goodlife used to be available on Comcast, but my local Comcast dropped it so I dropped Comcast. It is not as yet available on either satellite networks that I am aware. I would switch to whoever put Cheyenne on their schedule. Thursday nights on Goodlife schedule was Maverick, Cheyenne, Bronco, and then Maverick again. I never missed an episode of Cheyenne from 1955 to 1962. It is my all-time favorite show, until Doc, and Clint Walker is one of my favorite actors ever. By the way I was only 7 years old in 1955 and my parents weren't either one into westerns. Westerns have always been my favoirtes since I was a little boy and Cheyenne was NUMBER 1. I have been to Walmart twice a week since the TV add for Cheyenne first season release and they have never had it in.

I like your style in dumping Comcast for ditching Goodlife. I don't know why this channel is not more commonly available on cable systems and especially satellite systems. I used to be able to get this channel on cable also and loved Cheyenne and Bronco, and then the detective shows, most prominently 77 Sunset Strip. I have the Dish now and have complained several times to them about this, but I think I must be in a minority.

I just got my first season DVD today. I ordered it from Clint Walker's website (www.clintwalker.com)and had it autographed. I'm looking forward to getting each season as WB releases it. I remember as a kid watching Cheyenne and loving it. I am the same age as you (i.e. 7 years old in 1955)and that was the year we bought a TV. I really admired how big quiet Walker strictly upheld good-guy-dom all the time. As a kid I wanted to be big and strong like Mr.Bodie and bust up bad guys.

I liked him later in life as Posey in Dirty Dozen and in Night of the Grizzly. In that one a young Ron Ely (of Tarzan fame) gets punched out by Walker. I hope to start watching season one tomorrow.
