Clint in 'The 10 Commandments'

If you know where to look, you can spot Clint in the 1956 version of "The 10 Commandments." Reliable word has it that Clint was Cecil B. DeMille's first choice for the role of Joshua -- a part eventually played by John Derek. One can't help wondering how Clint's career might have been changed had he indeed played Joshua. One can't also help imaging that scene where Vincent Price whips Joshua's chest, only this time it's Clint Walker's chest that takes the lash!

Just finished Disk One (of a two disk set) of Ten Commandments. The commentary is very thorough. Detailing information on the leading actors (as well as the supporting cast ie Clint Walker). Extensive information was also provided by the commentator on costuming, hair/make-up, location shooting, studio filming, SFX. I liked the fact she mentioned Clint, each time he was in a scene. And the oops moment, brought about by Clint in the final throne room scene on Disk one. A retake was needed.

The first poster is right, Clint would have been an interesting Joshua. DeMille rightly thought, he had the physical qualities to look like a man who cut stone for a living. However, it would have been interesting to see Heston, lift Clint in the scene where Joshua shows up near death and needs assistance.

One Disk One of the Ten Commandments, Clint is in the background. The first scene has him as a Royal Guard to the Pharaoh who decreed the slaughter of innocents. Clint is wearing a horned helmet. Clint is also in the scene where Seti summons the guard. A very tall man with a sword appears. It is Clint. The third scene I remember is the final throne scene where Seti decrees that Moses name shall be stricken from all records. Clint is the one standing in the background on the left hand side. And he is in that very same horned helmet he first appeared in.... (DeMille liked to re use props). There might a scene I'm missing (sorry!).

If he shows up again on the second disk, I'll post.

Hope this helped a bit.

On the second disk... Clint is in a few brief throne room scenes (early on). The commentator mentioned that Mr. Walker was to be the guard, on the balcony... who said this line "Are the Captains of Egypt afraid of a little night mist?" as the deadly green mist swirled below the Pharaohs palace. However, DeMille when he saw the scene, noticed that everyone in the scene was so much shorter then "Norman" ... (Demille called him Norman). DeMille reshot the scene with Henry Wilcoxon saying that line. DeMille said he would make it up to Norman by including him in the great orgy scene (towards the end of the film). However, by then Mr. Walker was on the set of Cheyenne.

Have to appreciate the commentator, she always pointed out Clint, whenever he was in a scene.

I didn't see the film in original release. However, when it was first shown on TV my family watched. When reading the credits I noticed Clint was listed. For the longest time, I thought he might have been in the "making of bricks" scene with Heston. So I watched that scene very carefully. I mean.. those guys in the pits were to look like.. well they were muscled. So, um..... naturally. Well.

Hope I have been of some help.
