Juke Box in 1953

This movie came out in 1953, so it was filmed in 1952. When were juke boxes invented or mass produced? Are there any earlier movies showing a juke box that you know of? The records must have been the brittle 78-RPMs kind.

Doug 169,good to know that somebody is on line discussing this classic although i suspect it's late where you are(3pm Tues where i am). Can't help with the jukebox query but can tell you the movie was made in 3 weeks from late Feb'53 to mid March.I think Johnny tells the bar owner at one stage "don't worry man, you'll get ya money" but i'll have to get out the DVD and check it for you.

According to Wikipedia, "modern" jukeboxes came out in 1927, but by the 50's vinyl 45s instead of shellac 78s were in them...who knew?!

The transition from 78s to 45s coincided with the birth of rock 'n roll; Elvis' first couple of hits (Heartbreak Hotel, Don't Be Cruel) were available on either speed, and that was in 1956. 78s disappeared soon after that. As a teenager in the mid '70s, I was surprised to walk in a diner in rural PA and see that they still had an operational jukebox filled with 78 rpm records.

Ten-inch 78 rpm records for pop music were phased out in the 1950s, but 7-inch 78 rpm records (the same size as 45s) continued to be used for children's records well into the 1960s.
