The reasons why vaudeville died....
...are all illustrated (probably unintentionally) in this film!
These are only my opinions, so please don't take offense.
There was barely one scene in this film that I did not find cringe-worthy. It was the corniest movie I've ever watched and I had to fast forward through most of the overdone musical numbers. I watched it mainly for Marilyn and The Merm; unfortunately nearly every scene of MM was with the insufferable O'Connor. Was there even one moment where he wasn't being a complete ham and overdoing everything?
Ethel Merman made so few films. Two come to mind in which she should have certainly been cast in roles she created on Broadway: Annie Get Your Gun & Gypsy. Hearing her sing the title song in this film was certainly worthwhile, especially given that it was originally sung by her in Annie (GYG). The running time on TCM was shown as 135 minutes but I was relieved when it clocked it at just under 120.
They don't make them like this anymore and for that we can be very thankful!
