The River

The River is one of the most amazing parts of this movie. IT makes me want to go to the back country of the NW (I live in seattle) and raft down a river.

Some scenes are far fetched though. There is no way that the raft would have made it down some of those rapids and the Mitchum character survive. I cannot believe that they did there own stunts. Some of the scenes look like they are being filmed in a studio though, like when they are standing on the raft talking and there is a body shot of all 3 characters. It looks like studio work.

I love this movie. Everything about it is awesome. This film is very underrated.

I've loved this film since I first saw it on NBC's "Saturday Night at the Movies" in the middle 1960s. I recently got a DVD of it, and it looks great on my big HD TV.

I'm collecting as many of the movies from "Saturday Nights at the Movies" as I can. So far the one I can't seem to get a good copy of is "Beneath the 12 Mile Reef". There are plenty of copies available, but they all suck.

I saw this movie when it came out on a BIG theatre screen in cinemascope. It won't ever be shown like that again. The river and the mountains were the stars in this movie.

Back in 1973 in NYC there was a Marilyn film festival at the old Beacon Theater--when it still showed movies. "River" was one of the films, and it was pretty impressive on the big screen!

As a whitewater raft guide I will completely back you up. In fact, they would have never even made into the rapids most of the time. In most cases they would have followed the outside current and drifted into shore. Believe it or not, it's harder to stay in the current than it is to just drift out of it and into an eddy.

The river looked cool, but it's hard to get excited about the rafting action when it's so obviously actors posing in front of a green screen. Looks kinda limp - just like the rest of the movie.
