They only fell out over a horse didn't they? Sorry for the daft question but missed the start

He also stole their only rifle which they needed to protect themselves from the Indians. Still doesn't really seem like a good reason to kill someone. Very strange reaction from the boyfriend.

I think the original poster was asking why the boyfriend tried to shoot Mitchum at the end. I suppose it was simply because he was a spoiled sociopath. Mitchum was an obstacle, and he wanted to eliminate him. He also had been told that Mitchum was coming after him, so it was also self-defense. But the kid blew him away, so the problem was solved.
