Criterion -- believe it or not! (Updated)

Riot in Cell Block 11 will be released by the Criterion Collection on April 22, 2014.

Originally slated for release only in a dual-format Blu-ray/DVD edition, it will now also be available on a straight DVD. The Blu-ray/DVD combo retails for $39.95 and the DVD, which has two extra features, will run $24.95.

The updated list of extras includes:

* New 2K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray
* New audio commentary by film scholar Matthew H. Bernstein
* Excerpts from the director’s 1993 autobiography, A Siegel Film, read by his son Kristoffer Tabori
* Excerpts from Stuart Kaminsky’s 1974 book Don Siegel: Director, read by Tabori
* Excerpts from the 1953 NBC radio documentary series The Challenge of Our Prisons
* PLUS: An essay by critic Chris Fujiwara, a 1954 article by producer Walter Wanger (dual-format only), and a 1974 tribute to Siegel by filmmaker Sam Peckinpah (dual-format only)

Another great, off-beat Criterion release, and I believe their second Don Siegel film, after The Killers (1964).

If you can wait till Barnes & Noble's next 50%-off sale on Criterion titles (probably in June), the prices will be $19.99 for the Blu and $12.49 for the DVD. Take an additional $2 off the Blu and $1.25 off the DVD if you're a B&N member and get an extra 10% off (the sale, not retail, price). That's an added savings of almost $7 more off either edition compared to the Amazon cost, a hefty proportion of their retail prices.

Good---this is one film that truly deserves a Criterion release---it's historically important, and more importantly very well made. It just played this weekend and last weekend on the MOVIES channel, for those who haven't seen it yet.

I just purchased the Criterion DVD for only thirteen bucks at a half-price sale at a local Barnes & Noble in Central New Jersey.
