Utterly senseless release that calls to mind Criterion's other inexplicable ventures into well-trammeled territory: Citizen Kane and 12 Angry Men.
You can argue that their previous DVD incarnations weren't gold-medal standard, but frankly, Criterion was dipping into a dry well.
I wouldn't argue that On the Waterfront could perhaps benefit from a better DVD release, but is there any reason why it needs to be engineered by Criterion? I'd much rather see them divert their resources to salvaging films still languishing in the dusty vaults of neglect, and not adopting such a popular classic.
Screw this release. They'd make a lot more people happy resurrecting Sleuth from the flames of OOP hell.
"...if that was off, I'd be whoopin' your ass up and down this street." ~ an irate Tarantino
Yes, it'll have a DVD release but the big draw here is blu-ray. Sony has been sitting on the HD transfer for 3 years. With their current financial troubles and they're passing off of properties to boutique labels like Criterion, Olive and Twilight Time it makes sense.
