Brando picking up the glove

I can't believe how the moment when Brando picks up the glove has been into some brilliant piece of acting. It's more likely that Brando was just cold or got bored(Brando openly admitted he did not enjoy acting and dreaded going to work). Perfect example of how a seemingly mundane act is made into something "genius" just because someone talented does it.

u need to see the documentary which explains why that scene is still taugh to actors of how to be in the moment and do things that seem right for you at the moment.

It was a creative move on Brando's part. Most people would just have picked it up and handed it back to her and gone on with the scene. But Terry was a different kind of guy, he did things his own way, and Brando knew that.

On the DVD documentary, it is mentioned that yes, Brando being a method-actor picked it up and ran with it, and that in the world of the film, "Terry doing things his own way" was right in track as another poster mentioned.

It was also noted that the scene had a lot of subtext; James Lipton mentioned that Brando was trying to bring out the dual nature of Terry (both as a fighter, thug and his softer, female side) and how the two were in opposition.

There are 3 times in the film where Brando lets the feminine side come out: The glove scene, the bar scene with Edie, and in the cab with his brother during the famous "I coulda been somebody"

I think that Terry putting on the glove was sort of like "trying on" his feminine side. Not in a conscious way, but since Brando made the snap choice to play with the glove (being in the moment as a method actor) the subtext got created and sticks with us to this day.

I think there were more times than that. Think about how he acted with the birds, for example.

Silliness. Just silliness.

Okay. He wants to talk to her, she's reticent. She drops her glove. He picks it up. Puts it on. It's almost like he's holding her hand without holding it, keeping her there without trapping her. You got your last sentence backwards or upside down or something. What it actually is is a perfect example of how a talented person(yeah, talented like the Pacific Ocean is a large body of water) makes something genius out of a mundane act.

This was way before Brando dismissed his craft and was bored with it.
He reacted naturally thats why it is regarded as a fine example of "the method".Most actors dont know what to do with their hands and arms while reading their lines-thats why it looks like they're reading their lines, they look wooden with arms at their side or stiff in the air.
Watch young actors today-there is a generation of them that like to rub their hands together as they recite their lines. They must go to the same acting coach. All actors go through some sort of routine with their hands and arms.Like thumbing through a book or doodling with a pen.Brando picks up the glove and he could've just given it back, but has some fun with it-almost 60 yrs later we still talk about it.
