1954 was a good year for movies

On the Waterfront
Seven Samurai
Rear Window
Dial M for Murder
La Strada

All of these films are in the IMDb Top 250. The only one I haven't seen is La Strada, but I have it in my Netflix queue.

Okay, well... filibuster.

Wow! Great year indeed. I've seen them all. Only La Strada is missing from my movie collection.

Bad Day at Black Rock (John Sturges, 1954), starring Spencer Tracy and Robert Ryan (plus a young Lee Marvin).

... may be a little better film, actually, than On the Waterfront.

Don't forget Godzilla, Sansho The Bailiff, Twenty-Four Eyes, Touches Paz au Grisbi, and Them!.

I saw it. A thing that was cold and dry. It was me. - La Belle Noiseuse

Don't forget A STAR IS BORN and THE COUNTRY GIRL! Both amazing movies!

A Star is Born is okay-ish, The Country Girl is nothing special. I'd not mention either two alongside the best 1954 has to offer.

Oh, one more specialty from the great year: Senso.

Well personally I find Judy Garland's performance in A STAR IS BORN and Bing Crosby's in THE COUNTRY GIRL alone worthy of many more words than "okay-ish" and "nothing special." But when it comes down to it, these are, of course, opinions, not facts, as those are two of my personal favorites. ON THE WATERFRONT is not a personal absolute favorite of mine, but I do recognize it as a great movie with great qualities. So to each his own. But to be honest the 1954 Academy Awards did recognize both movies as something special (not that this influences my viewing observations whatsoever).

I agree, it appears The Country Girl & A Star is Born simply do not appeal to my taste (after all, my pick for the best film of 1954 is Senso). Kudos, though, if you cherish them as your favorites. 😀

I agree, 1954 was an excellent year for movies. I didn't care much for A Star is Born or The Country Girl (Grace Kelly has a screen presence, but a very small amount of actual talent.)

The fifties were a great decade, anyway, for film. I would rival it only with the seventies.

He won. Get over it.

Yes, I agree, Grace Kelly was a great movie star, but a decent actress at best.

IMO, the 50s only had the 60s and 70s as its rivals as far as best decades for cinema goes.

P.S: On a personal note, why so many people I know think Kelly is the Hitchcock Blonde to end all Hitchcock Blondes remains a mystery to me, especially since none of her performances in a Hitchcock film stood out.
