Similar movies?

Of course similar movies would be obvious. All the Godzilla sequels and remakes and all the other Toho Monster and Kaiju movies. But that isn't what I mean. For me those are (for the most part) not similar movies. They are not even the same genre. Those where simply monster and Kaiju movies, with a lot of them even not really being serious, but humorous and sometimes borderline ridiculous and cheesy.

Whereas I feel the original (Japanese version) of Godzilla, wasn't so much a Kaiju or monster film, as it was a serious, sad and sometimes even philosophical movie about the effects of nuclear weapons and mankind's self destructive behavior and stupidity in general.

In most other Godzilla and Kaiju films you don't have such themes anymore. So when I say I am looking for similar films it means I am looking for movies with such grim themes and similar metaphors and symbolism.

if you wait approximately 2 more months, you might have that similar film. Legendary's Godzilla looks like it's shaping up to be such a film that deals with themes such as mankind's inability to safely deal with their nuclear supply, their ignorance about how this incompetence affects the natural world that they inhabit, the consequences of tampering with nature, and so on.

I'm not saying with certainty that it will deal with said themes in an effective manner, but everything seems to indicate that it's heading in the right direction.

I don't know if you've seen it, but the war of the gargantuas is my alltime favorite kaiju film, I love it a little more than the original Godzilla movie. It's similar because it's a fun exciting old school monster movie but it has great themes concerning the duality of the power of nature. I highly reccommend it. Also looking toward to the new Godzilla movie, it looks amazing and seems like it is going for the themes of the original 1954 film.
