This is the one and only Godzilla film I have ever seen

This film was absolutely fantastic. I own the US remake on dvd, but have never seen it. Should I waste my time with it?

I am also curious to see some of the Japanese GOJIRA VS. ... films, but am not sure which ones to spend my money on. Any recommendations?

The 90s movie is entertaining for what it is, but it's hard to consider it a Godzilla film.

Toho has a variety of other films in the Godzilla universe. If you liked the monster attacks city aspects of Godzilla, then Rodan and Mothra may be what you're looking for. Each involves a giant monster invasion, and the government trying to figure out what to do. The namesake creatures of both of those films show up in later Godzilla movies as well.

As for the VS movies, i'd recommend Mothra vs Godzilla, or maybe some of the Heisei films. MvG is probably the most objectively good Godzilla film in the original series, but still has the fun of the later monster battle movies. The Heisei films are nice because the special effects got a lot better and the movies started taking themselves a lot more seriously. The Return of Godzilla (sadly, out of print), Godzilla vs Biollante, and Godzilla vs Destoroyah are pretty well-liked.

Really, the worst thing about the '98 version is the fact that it's called 'Godzilla'. If it were titled anything else, it would have been called anything else (except maybe, 'King Kong') it would have preformed fine as a 'giant-monster' flick.

Now keep in mind that the sequels are (for the most part) not nearly as serious as the original; they have a much lighter, even campy, tone, more emphasis on spectacle then character oriented drama. Sometimes they even include slapstick-comedy (G. Vs. King Kong, G's Revenge...). Still, if you know what to expect, they are VERY entertaining (some more so then others) Some of the best are; 'G. Vs. King Kong', 'Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster', 'Vs. Monster Zero' and 'Vs The Smog Monster'. Not to mention the two featuring 'MEGAGODZILLA'!

If you want something closer in tone to the first movie, try 'Vs. Biolante'.

I've only seen two. The 1954 original, and the 1998 American version. I liked the 1998 one when I was a kid, because, well, I was a kid, but today the only one of the two that I have any love for is the original Gojira. And in addition to these two films, there was a Godzilla cartoon series on TV when I was a kid, which I watched. I can't remember a single thing about it now, but I liked it when I was a little kid.

I'm actually contemplating the idea of delving into the myriad Japanese Godzilla sequels just for the heck of it, in full awareness that they aren't intended as serious as the original one with its anti-war and anti-nuclear messages.

I've only seen two.

The abysmal Japanese sequel Godzilla 2000, and the even worse 2014 American reboot.

I remember as lack luster and dated as the 2000 one seems, the 2014 version is even less enjoyable. Godzilla 2000 at least has a campy, humourous tone to it. The Godzilla from last year is so dry and corny, and not in a cute way. It plays more like an advertisement for the U.S. Military. At least in the 1998 one it showed them destroying most of N.Y.C. inadvertently, a realistic portrayal of how incompetent they are.
