I've watched this movie multiple times in the last two months, and one thing I've never been able to decide is if Mark and Margot last post movie. Maybe it's just because of Robert Cummings' bland performance but I don't see him being able to withstand how traumatized she's going to be post death row/finding out her husband was trying to kill her all along. What does everyone else think?
shareI'm not always an optimist, but I think they might work out. Margot will undoubtedly be traumatized, but Mark is a nice, dependable guy. He'll be able to give her life some stability-- I imagine she might move to the States with him, just to leave the whole sordid mess behind her.
shareYou know, I've watched the movie multiple times since posting this, and also read the play, and I've come to the conclusion too they do last :) I think I was just bitter about how boring Cummings is but you're right, Mark is a nice guy who genuinely cares about her, and could hopefully provide her with some much needed comfort after everything she's been through.
shareI get it-- I'm not fond of Cummings as Mark either. He's bland and dull, and I have to wonder if Hitchcock knew that and cast him to mess with the usual audience expectations (the villain is charismatic and charming, the "hero" is a non-entity). Still, he's not a sociopath and he does love Margot, so good for them :)
