Listening to Stephen Fry today saying the script is being written for a remake of this movie by guess who,, Peter Jackson, apparently he'a a great fan of the original. The rights to the book are owned by David Frost who is really keen on seeing a remake.

Fry worked on the script at least a couple of years ago. Peter Jackson wanted an Englishman to at least add some 'Britishness' to it.
Loved the idea for the trailer.
