Where was this filmed?

Where were the underwater sequences for the film shot? I heard something about a lake somewhere, and it being the same location for some of the shooting in Jaws.

Yeah on the Universal Studios California tour you can see a fake river that was used as a set during filming. It was very cool.

I heard that some of the filming, especially some of the underwater scenes were done in Florida at the Wakulla River and Springs. In fact I hear the whole crew reunites with their fans there every November. I also had an old 1954 Mechanix Illustrated magazine with an article and pictures and it too mentioned the Florida location. I liked the film alot and bought any magazine that had any info on it. I also had the old movie tape with the film highlites that I bought back around 1965. Life magazine had an article on Ben Chapman in one of the 1954 issues after the movie came out in which it mentioned that he not only acted and did stunt work but that he also did Tahitian style dancing as he had spent time there.

it says on the DVD where everything was filmed, underwater scenes were filmed in Florida as jean-schlage said.

I just watched this movie for the first time and it's cool, i love old horror movies...Better than new ones :-)

Everything under the water was filmed in Florida; everything above the water was filmed at the Universal back lot. By the same token, there were two monsters too: Ricou Browning did all the swimming underwater; Ben Chapman did all the above-the-water-stu ff at Universal. The superb DVD documentary made by non-fiction horror writer David J. Skal explains this in greater detail if interested...

I've been to the site in Florida where they filmed the water scenes and it is a beautiful location. I believe they also filmed some of the old Tarzan movies there. The name is Walkula Springs and you can ride a glass bottom boat.

That river must be gone. Nothing like it near Universal now:

That's sort of funny, because you can clearly read "Instituto de Biologia Marítima" with the brazilian flag on top of the sign on the fourth or fifth minute of the film. By the way, "Instituto de Biologia Marítima" is portuguese for "Maritime Biology Institute", and the localization of this Institute is, exactly, in Amazon (in other words, brazilian territory).
By the way, it is not just a sign with a flag, it really is Amazon. So we can say that, at least some shots of the movie, were taken here in Brazil.

In the early 90's, I worked on the Universal lot. I made friends with a guard who was one of those typical old-timers, full of hollywood stories. He told me that the parking lot I used out in the back was once an artificial lake (later filled in,) where, amongst other things, some of the scenes for CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON had been shot. That evening, when I went to my car, I took a good look at the surrounding mountains. Soon afterwards, I rented CREATURE to see if I could spot the location. It may have been wishful thinking, but I THINK I could recognize the topography. I parked in the Black Lagoon!

The underwater scenes were shot at the source of the Wakulla River just outside Tallahassee. The river was formed thousands of years ago by a massive sink hole opening up and gradually filling with rain water. The water is crystal clear and still serves as a great dive spot. Scuba divers can still descend into the sink hole. All kinds of artifacts have been found in there, including Saber tooth tiger teeth, arrowheads, etc. which can be found at the museum in downtown Tallahassee. Up the river a little bit are the tour boats that take you further up river and show you where the original Weismueller [sic] Tarzan movies were shot. And for anyone who is interested, the exterior shots of an airplane fuselage were shot there. I believe it was for one of those 70's disaster flicks like Airport '77 or something.

Lets not forget Marineland in Florida. I wasnt born yet, but my grandparents told me stories about how they went to marineland that was just blocks from where we lived and watched the filming in their underwater tanks. My great aunt told me she got cought on film.. or maybe it was just a picture. I don't know, but I played a lot at marineland as a youngin and will always remember that story.

You're all wrong! It was actually filmed in my city, Ocala Florida. At Silver Springs marine life park. I have been on the river probably 100 times. It's the same place all the old Tarzan movies were filmed.

The movie was filmed at Wakulla Springs, FL. So were the Johnny Weismuller Tarzan films. A lot of films were shot in the panhandle of Florida before tourists discovered it. Destin was a favorite spot. Now it's all tourists all the time so forget that. Elvis shot a movie on the Gulf coast..I think it was Follow that Dream. But The Creature was shot in Wakulla Springs. At least the outdoor water sequences were.

Sorry, but IMDB has known to be wrong on occasions, sometimes seeing is believing!

If you go to Universal Studios, and take the studio tour, you will go over a bridge and across a murky and black lagoon. That was where it was filmed.
