is this a great film? used to be well known,on tv ,current reputation?

This film always seemed to be on tv when I was younger.
But it is never on nowadays (in Britain at least)and it is not included when people issue boxed sets of Bogart's work.

So do people think it is a great film with great performances? is it accurate in relation to the naval background.

reply

Yes it is a great film, the performances of the actors are excellent and is a pretty accurate portrayal of the navy.

Except that there hasn't been a real mutiny in the United States Navy since 1842. Also, the regular "mutineers" could forget about a career in the navy. Like the army, officers, especially ship commanders, stick together and they don't like "squealers." As for the ones only in for the duration, their lives would have been hell until they got their discharges.

Well, putting the Navy aside, it is a well acted drama, of the first rank . . .

reply

No argument there.

Neither was there here!!!

The title of the movie was a misnomer, they did not mutiny nor were they charged with mutiny, they were charged with 'conduct unbecoming for an officer'

True . . . the word "mutiny" can have various meanings . . . it may mean something other than what we originally think . . .

Great film all the way, and several ex-military lawyers I know all praise the atmosphere of the court martial scenes--forget that nonsense of Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson hamming it up in A Few Good Men. One of Bogart's best performances and the rest of the cast is amazing as well.

I have to agree . . . The Caine Mutiny is a ten, and yes, that courtroom scene one of the best ever done . . . in A Few Good Men the quality is diminished, not the mature presentation from Caine, at best I'd rate it a five . . .
