colorize ?

Has this movie been colorize on DVD?, and if so is there a DVD that has not been colorize?

reply

The movie was originally done IN color!
It was digitally remastered since then, I believe.

THE CAINE MUTINY was done in technicolor. That was the type of color, I believe, was used in many of the movies in the 1950's that were in color. As for THE CAINE MUTINY itself, it was a favorite of mine and I have it in my video collection. I watched the movie recently as I caught it on cable TV. While watching it, I could not help but think how good the acting was when it came to the four leads. Fred MacMurray was especially good because this was one of the few films where he played the heavy.

reply

Fred played the heavy several times in his career and he was good at it.

"Double Imdemnity" and "There's Always Tomorrow" are two of the better examples.

reply

He was also the heavy in The Apartment, wherein he was excellent.

reply

The more I watch some of Freds earlier movie work, the more respect I have for him as an actor. He was definitely underrated.

reply

No question, very underrated. I always think of his performances as the heavy instead of the Flubber movies and My Three Sons.

It's an actor's curse that TV fame overshadows movie performances. Ernest Borgnine once said his obituary would begin "The star of TVs McCale's Navy..."

reply

Fred was also the heavy (along w/ Barbara Stanwyk) in 'Double Indemnity', one of the greatest of the noir thrillers. Fun fact: Fred's face was used as the model for the original 'Captain Marvel' before that superhero and his alter-ego, lame Billy Batson, morphed into SHAZAM!

Hi, Bob.

reply

I think of his three famous roles as a heavy in Double Indemnity, The Caine Mutiny, and The Apartment was Oscar-worthy.

reply

He really was underrated. And to think he never had an acting lesson.

reply

Well, he had been a musician with the California Five, so he had experience with stage work, memorizing lines, putting on a show, that sort of thing . . .

reply

It's still pretty impressive that he was such a natural at acting.

No, but you might look for a DVD that has been B&Wized. Oh!
