From the moment he appears he steals this movie, particularly in his drunken scene. But even his quiet moments are great. His lawyer portrayal is the most lawyerly I've ever seen. I'd seen this years ago and recalled it as one of Bogart's best performances, and I think it is, but Ferrer really shines.

totally agree. as great as bogart was, ferrer was equally outstanding and deserved at least an oscar nomination, but that was the year of "on the waterfront". ferrer was better than the eventual winner (edmond o'brien for "the barefoot contessa").
I concur! But I've often wondered: why was Ferrer's right hand bandaged? Was it really injured, or was this just for the movie?

Yes, he was great in the role, especially his interaction with McMurray. His character in the book was even better.
People keep talking about how great Bogart was, and it was one of his best roles. But I think Ferrer and Van Johnson were even better than Bogie in the film.

I loved the first scene between MacMurray and Ferrer where Greenwald doesn't tolerate Keefer's smart-aleck attitude and exposes Keefer's lack of true knowledge about his subjects (psychoanalysis & naval codes), causing Keefer to bail from the room at the first opportunity.

In in the book where Ferrer's character is actually defending Bogie's character. Somthing like "I want to drink to the captain. You see "while Willie was on the ball field's of Princeton and Keefer was writing his novels, Queeg kept Herman Goehring from washing his fat ass with my mother."
As great as Bogey was, Jose was better. I loved the part where he got the doctor to say the word "paranoia." Then he asked, "What was that?" And he actually got him to repeat the word.

And how about the fact that a Latin actor could carry off playing a Jewish character? You don't even think about "Jose" but wonder where Barney had his bar Mitzvah.
