What state?
FKB was set in the town of Springfield but what state was it supposed to be in? I lean toward Illinois but does anyone know for sure? I can't remember it ever being said.

shareI don't believe they ever indicated which state Springfield was in. Although, they did say the family lived in the midwest when Betty won a contest to spend some time in Hollywood because she looked like a current movie star.
So that probably would put it in Illinois or Missouri or Ohio?
"I'm trying to live forever. So far, so good."
My guess would be if they ever gave the state it was in the old radio show.
It is never stated, but there were discussions of Betty's long trip to Hollywood and Margaret's long trip to meet Jim in New York. On the other hand there were the very casual feelings in the family when Bud joins the debating team on their trip to Chicago. So Illinois is a good guess, maybe Indiana. There was also an episode where all the kids were surprised about anyone they knew living on a farm. So I assume Iowa is out and probably Wisconsin.
Kind of like Leave It to Beaver. No location is specifically stated, but one assumes the midwest. In one episode Ward is identified as the former sheik of Shaker Heights (Ohio) and June as the belle of East St. Louis (Illinois). Funny they used that town. Perhaps at the time June was born it wasn't a bad place to live, but today it is one of the most crime-ridden cities in the country. Later in the series Beaver talks of going surfing, so as we see consistency was not a big item on their agenda. Don't think anyone anticipated reruns, especially going on for more than 50 years. The surfboarding references were just a way to include a than pop culture phenomenon, brought on by the Beach Boys string of hit recordings.
It's never stated because it's not set in any particular state. The fact that many, if not most U.S. states have an actual Springfield is further evidence that the show takes place in none of those states.
Why are people so obsessed with pinning down the location when it's so clearly and deliberately left vague? Even the region of the country seems to shift, as some episodes seem to depict the midwest, the northeast or even Southern California. Heck, even the family member's accents indicate they come from different parts of the country!
It's difficult even to determine the size of the city. Springfield is home to a major university, but apparently only one high school. Country clubs and swanky night spots abound, and there's even a ghetto of sorts, while characters alternately cherish or lament life in a one-horse town.
So in the interest of universal appeal and script flexibility, the series is clearly set in, well, Springfield.
In Season 2, Episode 3, titled "Lesson in Civics", Jim Anderson states that George Washington stopped in Springfield in route to his 1789 inauguation in NYC.
Being a Virginian that would imply more so that Springfield is located in an Eastern state. Perhaps Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania or New Jersey. To conform with that information.

There's an episode called "Family Goes to New York," where Margaret talks about the drive taking under 24 hours. Another episode mentions Altoona, PA being a distance but not ridiculously far away. So I always assumed Ohio.
Of course, the producers went out of their way to avoid mentioning a state. Even when a letter address was once shown, it simply said "Springfield," with no state!
Leave it to Beaver did the same, The Donna Reed Show and Lassie as well. Even later shows, such as Mama's Family. I wonder why?

It's not likely to be in a coastal state since--as far as I know--there were no episodes showing the family going to the beach.

I wish I could remember the name of the episode but it involves Margaret and Jim helping Bud at the last minute with some kind of fair in their back yard. Anyway, there is a scene in the kitchen where Margaret pulls out a phone book and there is a name on it, but it wasn't Springfield. I had to zoom in to see it, you won't be able to see it when she picks the book up.
I am sure it was just a prop from any given place, and of course way back then, there wasn't a slight thought that some day people would watch dvd's and be able to zoom in, but I thought it was interesting about the name of the city on the phone book. I'll have to pull out the booklets in the dvd's to see if I can recognize the title, and watch it again just for curiosity's sake.
In the Season 5 episode "It's a Small World" When the hotel clerk asks Jim if he is expecting his wife, Jim replies, "My wife is a 1,000 miles from here." Doing a Google check, that would put Springfield in central Illinois.
shareYes it is hard to nail down the location, which was something done on purpose to draw in people around the nation. However, I'm with you, and to repeat something I said previously, there were instances noting how far away New York and California were, while at the same time the very casual noting in one episode that Bud was going to take a trip to Chicago.
Also there is an episode about whistling at girls where Dotty asks Betty to go with her boyfriend to a junior college dance when she cannot attend, because Betty is a 'safe' girl to leave him with.
The reason Dotty can't go is because the family must go to Milwaukee for the weekend to attend a family wedding. Again there is a casual easy trip to a midwest city. How can there be any doubt that the Anderson's home town is in that area and very probably in Illinois.
Just the other day there was another location reference via a very funny line. It occurs in the episode where Betty tries to get a grouchy old man to cut his hedge which is leading to a blind spot and traffic accidents. Early on Betty complains that her life is not very worthy and whats to make a difference. When father suggests some project, Betty disparages it as not important enough. She then proclaims she wants to throw herself into something really big. Bud responds saying, How About Lake Michigan!!
shareWere you ever able to find the title/zoom in enough to see the actual phone book name? Just curious!
shareFunny you should ask, just 2 days ago I was thinking about that. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the episode. It was the one where Bud offers to have some kind of party or fair in his back yard. It was something about Jim and Margaret agreeing to help at the last minute. Margaret picks up the phone book to either call a parent or a store and that is where I had zoomed in. What I need to do is go through the guides and see if any of them ring a bell. I will keep you posted and thanks for lighting a fire to get me going!

It was in the episode titled The Lawn Party (thank you miss rhea) from season 3. I zoomed in and the title on the cover of the telephone book is New Haven. I couldn't make out anything else but most phone books only give a city, not a state. At least mine doesn't.
So we still don't know what state the show is supposed to be set in and who knows where in California they got a New Haven directory. Probably a prop from some other show or movie. Who back then would have known some day we'd be zooming in to see the title on the phone book???
Just an FYI...New York, Indiana, Michigan and Connecticut all have a city New Haven.

I thought Mama's Family was in Missouri or Virginia.
shareThose are good points you made Ron. I noticed both in Father Knows Best and LITB, that there are certain episodes that can lock you into a pretty specific location (such as the Midwest), but then another episode pops up that places them 1000 miles away at another location.
So they are really making it Anytown, USA.

A thousand miles from the coast as per the episode 'Short Wave'.
shareIn Season 2, Episode 33 (Hero Father), it is stated that Duke Snider's All-Stars will have to pass through Springfield on the way from Pittsburgh to Duluth, but since states aren't mentioned, who's to say Duluth isn't in Georgia, rather than the more obvious Minnesota?
shareNone of the characters on the show had southern accents, so I would rule out Georgia.

In the reunion movie Kathy and her boyfriend Jason are said to have come from Kansas City but it's not stated if it's Kansas or Missouri (I'm ruling out the one in Oregon due to several things already mentioned that lean toward the Midwest.) Jason does say something about having come 500 miles to Springfield. According to Mapquest, it's about 330 miles from Kansas City, Kansas to Springfield, Illinois...but just over 500 to Springfield, Indiana. Both Springfields are approximately 150 miles from Chicago. IMHO, I'm leaning towards Indiana.

Here's another geographical reference: in Season Four's "Country Cousin," Milly comes from a tiny little town, Gurney. There is a Gurney in Wisconsin, population 158. Milly flew to Springfield.
shareThe problem with the Gurney clue is that in the same episode when cousin Milly arrives, Mr. Anderson said that she has had a long trip and was on the plane for 5 hours!
So if she had that long a flight from Wisconsin that would likely put Springfield on one of the coasts. And the coasts don't seem to go with the other clues.
