Hi In answer to the question ! Rusty was rin tin tins owner in the series . The dogs were three I THINK dogs if I remember right that played the dog, one would do all of the running and jumping parts ,another would do close ups. another would do all of the extra stunts. But all dogs were well trained and very easy to work with. bEAUTIFUL DOGS!! Take care Mary

Mary - Long time since you have posted. Trust that all is well. IMDb needs more information for your biography. Be glad to add anything you think important. SAGE STEPS

Rin Tin Tin was 'owned' by Corporal Rusty played by Lee Eaker....and every time there was danger requiring quick canine action, he would always yell "Yooooooo Rinty!!" and then you KNEW that some ne'er do well was in for a mauling.

His name is spelled Aaker not Eaker.

Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.

Yes, so I think that a really long fictional list of names in alphabetical order ought to start with a name like Aaron A. Aakar.

I do not know about character names, but why would anyone name a character in a western "Rip" (or some other oddball name like that?)?

reply

My parents had a friend called "Rip", which I think was a nickname.

Lt. Masters was not named "Rip". He was Ripley "Rip" Masters, so Rip was his nickname. Ripley is a surnamed used as a personal name, which is a common practice.

There was a fort in Minnesota from 1848-1877, named Fort Marcy, then Fort Gaines, and in 1850 Fort Ripley, after Brigadier General Eleazer Wheelock Ripley (1782-1837).

And you may have heard about Ripley's Believe it or not.

Why are you surprised by characters in a western having oddball names? Do you think that there is something about the western genre which demands that all characters have common names? Or do you think that everyone in the wild west had a common ordinary name?

Like Wyatt Earp, for example, was a common name.

In support of Rusty being the owner, there was an episode on recently in which Rusty moved away to live with an old woman said to be his long-lost wealthy grandmother. Rinny boarded the stagecoach with Rusty, with the post's troops saying farewell to them both, and they lived together in Grandma's mansion. (I didn't sit through the ending, but I assume the reunion fell through and Rusty and Rinny returned to the post.)

I think that, like Cheyenne Bodie, Rusty and Rinny were the sole survivors of an indian attack on a wagon train. They were found by soldiers, not Cheyenne Indians, and "adopted" by the soldiers of fort apache. It was actually a fairly successful childrens show as I remember

Actually Lassie(1954-1973) was a very long lasting series.

And so Lassie had several owners.

From 1954-1957 Lassie was the Pet of Jeff Miller, and those episodes were syndicated as Jeff's Collie.

From 1957-1964 Lassie was the pet of Timmy Martin, and those episodes were syndicated as Timmy and Lassie.

From 1964 to 1970 Lassie was more or less the pet of several Forest Rangers. Corey Stuart (1964-68), Hank Whitfield (1964-66), Bob Erikson (1966-68), and Scott Turner (1966-68).

From 1970-1971 Lassie traveled on her own with no human companions.

From 1971-1973 and her youngest owner was Ron Holden, with Lucky baker a neighbor child.

I have often thought about a science fiction series where someone traces Lassie's past owners and discovers she is immortal.
