Brilliant

This is an incredible movie. The cinematography alone demonstrates the superiority of celluloid film over digital film, and the skill of the director and cinematographer is a wonder to behold. The storyline is great, too!

Ugetsu was at one point in the Sight and Sound top ten films of all time.

I’m a little sad for modern audiences who think CGI effects and camerawork that spins non-stop or frantic quick editing make for a good movie. They don’t know what they’re missing, but Ugetsu is a good start! It’s not long and is a good introduction to the best of Japanese 50’s cinema.
