SO UNDER RATED!!!!!!!!!

I love Akira Kurosawa just as much as the next guy, don't get me wrong. But this movie is seriously ATLEAST equal to anything Kurosawa has ever done, if not better.

How can it be that virtually no one has heard of this movie?!

Probably because Mizoguchi died just when Japanese cinema was gaining prominence in the west. I can't really compare Kurosawa and Mizoguchi, being that I've only seen one film be each of them, but I enjoyed Ugetsu Monogatari more than Seven Samurai even though the acting was probably better in the latter. Here's hoping Criterion releases more works by this man so more people do get the chance to know his work.

If you like Mizo, check out his other films like "Sansho Dayu" and "The Life of Oharu", as well as his three masterworks from the 30's: "Osaka Elegy", "Sisters of the Gion" and "Story of the Last Crysenthynums". R2 in the UK have released a DVD of "Life/ Diary of Oharu". The R1 47 Ronin disc is out of print unfortunately.

I know what you mean, "highest power". I am currently on a quest to see all of the great Kurosawa's films that I can, having seen at least 8 of his over the years. But, nothing I've seen can truly compare to Ugetsu by Mizoguchi. I was blown away when I saw it on VHS about 10 years ago and again (this year) on the Criterion DVD. It is such a powerful film. I hope his other films, none of which I have yet seen, will be forthcoming.

Let's be honest, Ugetsu is way better than anything Kurosawa ever did. In fact, I would place Ugetsu, Sansho Dayu and Life of Oharu all higher than any Kurosawa film.

Akira Kurosawa and KENJI MIZOGUCHI are 2 of the best filmmakers ever and the 2 best representations of Japanese cinema!

late spring best film by ozu
Samurai Rebellion best film by Masaki Kobayashi
Sansho the Bailiff best film by Kenji Mizoguchi
