Santa Carla ??

Trivia Question. In "Trouble Along The Way", St. Anthony's plays "Santa Carla"; since Holy Cross, Villanova and Notre Dame are correctly identified, Why "Santa Carla" instead of Santa Clara? Anyone out there know?

Just a guess: perhaps permission was withheld to use the actual name, since the film depicted corruption in college football.

This is only a guess, but since St. Anthony's team only actually played "Santa Carla" in the movie and not the other teams, maybe that's why the producers felt that the name had to be fictional.

Santa Clara doesn't play Fb while the others mentioned do.

Actually Santa Clara DID play Football until 1952, when it was dropped. It was reinstated in 1959 and the Broncos greatly distinguished themselves until 1992 when financial pressures, ironically considering the theme of this movie, forced SCU to discontinue the Football program.

Santa Clara gave up varsity football in 1952, the year before "Trouble Along the Way" was released. So maybe that's why they refer to the school in the movie as "Santa Carla" rather than Santa Clara.

Before they were disbanded for financial reasons in 1952, Santa Clara's football team was quite successful and was often nationally ranked.

The Santa Clara Broncos beat LSU in the 1937 and 1938 Sugar Bowls, and Kentucky in the 1950 Orange Bowl.
