i am a criterion addict i own the original criterion dvds of:
hiroshima mon amour band of outsiders down by law short cuts rushmore royal tenenbaums life aquatic l'avventura touchez pas au grisbi seventh seal wild strawberries cries and whispers fanny and alexander la commare secca diary of a country priest fear and loathing in las vegas a woman is a woman ikiru bob le flambeur le cercle rouge tokyo story night and fog last temptation of christ jules and jim my own private idaho by brakhage: stan brakhage short films
and a burnt copy (dont tell anyone) of Red Beard, Rashomon, Throne of Blood, Seven Samurai, The Third Man and Solaris
Their releases are addictive, aren't they? I'm nowhere near finished buying titles from them, but here's what I have now:
Tout va Bien A Woman Is a Woman Contempt The Third Man The Passion of Joan of Arc Ikiru Rashomon L'Avventura L'Eclisse Andrei Rublev Solaris Tokyo Story Fanny and Alexander Boxed Set Antoine Doinel Boxed Set (The 400 Blows, Stolen Kisses, Bed and Board, Love on the Run) Carl Dreyer Boxed Set (Day of Wrath, Ordet, Gertrud, My Métier) The Rules of the Game 8 1/2 Juliet of the Spirits
I just noticed that Truffault's "Shoot the Piano Player" and René Clément’s "Forbidden Games" will be released by Criterion in December. Their taste is exceptional!
I liked Ordet, but it's a very strange experience, and many people disliked it. I do plan on checking out some of Melville's movies; there's just so many movies to see, and so little time!
Amarcord The Hidden Fortress The Last Temptation Of Christ Rashomon Seven Samurai The Third Man Yojimbo 8 1/2 Ikiru Tokyo Story Chasing Amy (doesn't really fit well in this list, huh, lol)
Just one comment I'd like to make: As much as I appreciate films in general and as much as I really enjoy certain classics (Citizen Kane, 2001, Apocalypse Now, Rebecca, etc.) I can't say that I found any of the above movies to be what I consider excellent (except for the more recent "Last Temptation Of Christ"). I liked some quite a bit, others less, but no less than 5 of the above movies are among those considered "the greatest of all time" on various lists, most notably the Sight & Sound list (the complete list, mind you, not just the top ten). Either way, I find myself giving more credit to these films than I think they truly deserve and, unfortunately, Tokyo Story follows this trend. Watching the film and listening to the commentary, I can appreciate everything Ozu tried (and succeeded) to do. However, I can think of many films that I think truly deserve a 4/4 star rating and are not on my list of the greatest films of all time, but I can't honestly muster anything higher than a ***/**** rating for Tokyo Story. While it's insightful, it's not only long and slow moving, it FEELS long and slow moving and while I'm glad I watched it, I don't think it deserves it's status as some monumental achievement. I know this is subjective, but I often wonder why some of these old "classics" are elevated to such elite status. Btw, I own (21) pre-1959 movies so I'm not biased to any genre or era, but many of these movies, while good, rarely strike me as being "masterpieces" or even "classics" Not trying to prove a point; just wondering if anyone agrees. :-)

"and a burnt copy (dont tell anyone) of Red Beard, Rashomon, Throne of Blood, Seven Samurai, The Third Man and Solaris" ================== lol, i burnt those Kurosawa movies, too, i do feel ashamed of myself for doing it but hey, i spent a good load of my money on other Criterion films already, plus Criterion is extra-expensive compared to regular DVDs
Definently a Criterion addict, the best part of it though is that I got most of these way below cost at a store I used to work at. Stupid, ignorant people would come in and sell their dvds for about $2-8 cash and then I could turn around and buy them for 10% more. Best deal was The Battle of Algiers for $6. hahahahahhaha.
