LMAO you both crack me up. Yeah, you are on to me! I spent the whole night righting all the wrongs of the "Academy" and posting which films *I* would have given the BP award to. After I was done I felt slightly vindicated. hahaha
shareBoth are amazing movies.

From Here to Eternity is a classic as well. When you think about it, both are remarkable movies, even by today's standards.
Roman Holiday- An excellent execution of an otherwise simple movie. The cast, direction, and the little touches of charm and human qualities of the Roman culture, locals, and duty vs. love elevate the movie to sheer magic and a timeless classic.
From Here to Eternity- The opposite of RH; a sanitation of book that was considered unfilmable because it was so raw and salacious even for today. Also the studios took a risk casting Donna Reed and Deborah Kerr, typecast as respectively as the girl next door and the prim English lady, as sensual, complicated women.
There are creaks now and then in the movie, but that is purely due to the production code and efforts to try to contain the movie.
The cast did such a wonderful bringing out the complexities of the characters, they made them memorable and under Zinneman's direction rose beyond the restrictions of the Production code to make a wonderful which still stands today.
On that note, I'd still give BP to FHTE, not just because of how great it turned out to be, but because it managed to beat such difficult odds.

I personally prefer Roman Holiday as well. Movies like this did win sometimes back then (It Happened One Night) so it would not have been out of the ordinary. It's a perfect screenplay.
shareFrom Here to Eternity has stronger performances, but I myself prefer Roman Holiday by far. (Not sure if I would call it the year's best.)
Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!
