The sequel
Anne abdicates after she finds herself pregnant by Joe, scampering back to Rome. And yet penniless after forfeiting his big news story, he's left town. Anne is left with a permanent limp after being pushed down the steps of his building by his still enraged cleaning lady.
Anne takes up with photographer Irving. He doesn't want to settle down, however, and drives her away by demanding she pose for tawdry photos with girlfriend Francesca and his regular model, Honey.
Humiliated, Anne next turns to barber Mario, who once told her she could be a model. But he derides her now gimpy gait, insists she cannot do runway work, and turns out to be a manic depressive alcoholic who pimps her out in exchange for shop supplies. Desperate to raise funds for a back alley abortion, Anne complies.
No longer the "new girl on the block," and further disfigured by her botched surgery, Anne is reduced to working the midnight streets of Rome for cut rates.
A year later, she sees a carriage carrying her younger sister (who's taken her place on the throne) through the city on another goodwill tour. Anne watches tearily from the crowd, and finally throws herself before it, a la Anna Karenina.
BLACKOUT!
